If you are an avid gym-goer, then you know the crowd. You know it all too well.
My worst experience at a job thus far in my life was an extremely hot day where I spent an entire afternoon digging a hole to stabilize a piece of equipment in.
The next day when I went back to the site I found the hole filled back in. A change in plans by management filled the hole and made me an unhappy camper. You see, it wasn’t just the hard work that made me so unhappy with the job. I had done things much harder than that.
It was the fact that the job literally had meant nothing in the scheme of things. It was digging a hole for digging a hole’s sake. It was direction-less hard work. It resulted in no meaningful experience.
Wanting To Matter
There is a reason people hate doing jobs like that. People want to matter. They want to know the things they are doing are cared about. They want to know that their pursuits have importance in the world. Otherwise, they feel like they are expending energy for no reason other than expending energy. And that’s tiring.
Jobs without a purpose are just like that. They are tiring. They don’t have a purpose. They don’t achieve anything.
So many of the jobs that we do can have this attribute though. Working within a company, information is power, and those at the top have all of it. The workers underneath follow orders, but for an end they do not see. The job is just a job.
The Direction Lights The Way
How many times have you been unable to understand how to perform a certain activity until you know what purpose it is supposed to accomplish? Once, you find the direction you are supposed to go, then you are able to start walking the path. It gives you an ability to see the significant values involved in a situation.
If you see that you are aiming for a genuine value which is important to you, then trying to reach that value becomes an important task. The job itself has importance. It becomes enjoyable for what it leads to.
You Need A Goal
To be able to love what you do on a daily basis, you need to have a direction, a path to follow. For this you need a goal. You need to have something of importance that you are struggling for. This makes the current job important. It puts the job in the overall picture and makes it matter.
Making a proper goal is important, as it allows you to be passionate about what you do on a daily basis.
Without a goal, you lose the ability to see the importance of what you are doing, and how the activity is connected to the world at large.
If you are working in a job you hate, then set a goal to get out of it, and come up with a plan to reach that goal. If you need a certain amount of money to achieve the goal, then set out to get that money, and love the task for what it truly means for you.
Whenever we make a decision, we tend to focus on the positive aspect of it and completely ignore the negative. [Read more…] about Accounting For Mayhem
