Investing in the stock market can be a tough shindig. Play the game right and you can make mucho money. Play it wrong and well…lose mucho money. And sometimes no matter what the experts say, things can go wrong in a hurry.
Investing in yourself, however, is a sure win, but its a different kind of game. With the stock market, you put your money in and let it work. Investing in yourself means you have to put in the work. The dividends you receive are contingent upon the quality of the work.
Luckily, there are all sorts of avenues available to improve yourself and make you a walking goldmine. Here are 10 of the most important.
Incorporating exercising into your daily routine is pretty much required. Without exercising you are missing out on pretty much every benefit that could enhance your quality of life. Whether its your energy levels, mood, ability to focus, etc., exercising can help improve it.
Incorporating exercise does not take much of a commitment or a chunk out of your time either. 45 minutes three times a week can be plenty if done right and the kind of exercising you do is only limited by your imagination.
If you want to be an expert in any field, you are going to have to be well-read. When it comes to any area of study entire libraries can be filled with books concerning a single problem. You are going to have to aware of the questions and answers concerning that problem.
Think of a book as another tool in a tool-box. If you do not know how to use the tool it is useless.
However, by reading the book you know the proper usage. Even though it may have a specific use when the time comes you will be able to pull it out and solve the problem.
Investing your time in reading is investing your future ability to take part in something important and rewarding.
A lot of what you are able to accomplish comes down to your energy. Trying to write a report while yawning every few moments is frustrating.
Usually we give ourselves a quick energy fix. Coffee, tea, a pop, energy drink. All these things are used to keep us up and running hard.
It is through improving sleep, though, that energy levels are best kept at optimum. When you improve the quality of your sleep you improve the quality of your daily routine. Energy is the drive behind goal achievement.
How can we improve sleep?
- Keep the room a little chilly.
Turn down the temperature and snuggle up in a nice blanket. The lower temperature will help relax you a bit and keep your body temperature down, which makes for good sleep.
- Have a wind-down routine.
Reading before bed is great for relaxing you for sleep and helps you achieve that other self investment thing we had already talked about (see above).
- Know Thyself.
Do you like having pillows under your knees? Using a breathe right strip? Have a fan blowing? Figure this stuff out. Experiment a little and see what works best for you.
Keeping up with friends and family is a good self-investment. Keeping connected with those around you improves your mental well-being. Having a good time with friends can be a great way of relaxing and taking your mind off the daily grind.
Building friendships and acquaintances can also help you when tough problems occur in your life. You will have a support behind you to help you through.
99.999% of people’s nightmares revolve around being forced to speak in front of an audience. And I agree, it is terrifying.
Improving on this area of your life though is extremely important. You never know when you may have to give a presentation or a talk on a subject. Even if you don’t, improving your public speaking will give you more confidence when conversing with others.
Staying with communication, writing is another avenue of improvement that will pay dividends. Much of our communication is with writing and it is very important to be able to write clearly and concisely.
An idea can be communicated in vastly different ways. Understanding proper mechanics of good prose is necessary in order to communicate that idea properly, with the correct amount of flash, humor, and depth for a particular audience.
Writing correctly pays off whether in college or in the workplace.
The Peripherals (aka Fun Ones)
When it comes to changes in physical appearance that improve confidence the whiteness of your teeth is ranked pretty high (along with your body, but you should already be exercising knucklehead!).
One of the best feelings is to take some time to brush your teeth, floss, use mouthwash, and then smile in the mirror, admiring your own suave debonair. It really is a confidence booster and when it comes to success, confidence matters a lot.
Cultivate your creative side every once in a while and make something. Find the medium you like to work with. Clay, Pencil, Watercolor, Wood, Iron, Etc.
Taking some time to craft something aesthetic is both relaxing and enables you to have a creative outlet.
Currently, I enjoy doing pencil drawings. Each drawing takes about 30 minutes to accomplish, not much in the grand scheme of things, and enables me to create something I’m proud of that lasts.
Just like artistic ability, cooking is a craft that allows you to create with pride. Buying a pizza is nice and easy, but the one you make on your own satiates your taste buds and your ego.
Improving your cooking is one of the best things you can do to improve your quality of life. You will save loads of money by not eating out, gain a better understanding of the food you eat, and be able to wow your friends when you have social gatherings.
The health benefits are also mentionable as well, so take some time out of your day to find a good recipe, gather your ingredients, and make yourself a good meal.
Watching movies, TV series, and taking part in general pop culture is not only for socially shallow. Doing so allows you to take part in the larger community. You are an individual that is part of an era. Taking an active part in the going-ons of that era gets you connected.
We are about to enter 2013, so taking advantage of the tools and knowledge of our day allows us to shape the tools and knowledge of the future.
Pop culture is a fun way of being active in the present, socially.
And even if you don’t think of it that way, keeping up with what is popular keeps you interesting to the opposite sex.
Improvement of the self implies improvement of the parts that make up that self.
I, as a human being, require sleep, energy, friends, resources, and knowledge to thrive. Improving on the aspects that improve my thriving is a good way of living meaningfully.
Whether its through reading more, sleeping better, exercising harder, or finding closer friends, investing in the things that allow our human nature to flourish is investing in something worth more than anything else.
