Current underlying feelings cause us to look at situations in different ways. Often in ways we would not care for. Attempting to remove these goggles will light up a perspective that is wholesome and lasting.
You know that guy/girl. The one who walks into work everyday with the pissed off, “woe is me” attitude. You know, the second you see their face, that some story is going to be told about what had happened to them that day. And while you would rather just be left alone to work, you have to hear about how their neighbor’s dog took a big #2 in their front lawn and they slipped and fell in it while getting their morning paper.
But in-between the laughter when you tell your co-workers the same story and your attempt to hold your chuckles at bay around this person, you notice something.
This person’s reaction to any situation in that day is related to their horrible mood.
Nothing New To See Here
Dispositions, or long term emotional states, are their own monster though.
If you have felt a certain way for a long time, then the thoughts you have are within that same environment, along with your actions, the things you hear, and just about everything in the world around you.
You are like a child living a perfect life where you have popular friends, all the toys you could ever dream of, and a nice future ahead. Except, your parents won’t stop fighting.
As a result, it will be a miracle to make it out with a wholesome character. While your environment is mostly amazing, this one bad thing can bring it all crumbling.
The same is true of disposition. You could live in the best neighborhood, have the best spouse and the best job, but if you continue to let a lousy disposition lurk behind it all, someday you will find yourself devoid of support from others.
It’s In The Thinking
The reason this phenomenon will eventually happen is simple.
Your ideas, your thoughts, your values, your emotions; they are all connected. To use the same analogy as above, they all dwell within the same environment. The same village.
If you tear down the store everyone loves to build a parking lot, things aren’t going to be good for awhile. The Hendersons, the rich folks in town, might get an uprising going. Pitchforks will be donned by the inhabitants and the inside of your head will resemble some strange seen in a Frankenstein movie.
Your disposition determines a large amount of just how you will experience a situation. If you think everyone is out to get you, then every situation will reflect that belief. If you are constantly moping, then any attempt to help you is met with contempt.
Take Off The Goggles
The amazing thing about the human mind is that you can become aware of whatever is having an effect on you. There is an old piece of advice, which is never go to the store while hungry.
I have my own that I try to live by: “Never try to make an important decision while tired.”
Why? Because when you are tired, you only think of rest. Whatever you are doing, even if it is worthwhile, will seem exhausting if you are already tired. Taking some time off to rest up and then think about the issue will ensure that your decision was made by a person in their wits.
Likewise with other dispositions. Angry all the time? Cool off and think about what it is that is bothering you. Bracket that emotion off of situations in which it will only mess you up.
There are always things that are going to be bothering you, but you have to have the awareness to know what they are and when they need to be dealt with.
Without doing this, you will become that person who treats every situation under the perspective that their disposition allows, and usually this is not worthwhile.
Ensuring that you have a good handle on your emotions and dispositions will allow you to take on any task without falling victim irrelevant feelings.
